Nayan Vagadaya had driven more than three hours to the Civil Hospital here after he heard that his uncle was one of the victims of the Air India plane crash, the country’s deadliest in almost three decades.

Air India has decided to retire flight number AI 171 after a crash near Ahmedabad claimed 241 lives. The flight from Ahmedabad to Gatwick will now operate as AI 159, with the return as AI 160.

Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 carrying 242 people, crashed after taking off from Ahmedabad on its way to London.
